Reconciliation
“Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.” Matthew 5:23-24
There are times in our life when we offend people without knowing. The individual may not say anything to us however, their behavior and demeanor drastically changes. They begin to withhold conversations, their body gets stiff and ridged when we approach them, their smile no longer reaches their eyes or they act like a caged animal looking for a way of escape whenever we come near.
These behaviors may indicate that the person has something against you. They may not want to express it with their mouth, but their actions are making the issue known. It is in situations like these that the Lord challenges us to live out Matthew 5:23-24. We are to go and be reconciled with our brother. From a humanistic point of view, this is a hard thing to do. Our minds are wired in a way to recall and recount all the ways in which the person is wrong and we are not. However, we are not called to follow our own minds, but rather to allow the mind of Christ to be established in us (Philippians 2:5).
It is our choice whether we allow the soundness of the mind of Christ to be established within us. In order to reconcile with our brother our minds must be renewed. The renewal of our minds will tear down old arguments, rationales, and reasoning’s. If we agree and consent to the transforming of our minds then we will be able to walk as peacemakers and as such to be called the sons of God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9
This week’s challenge is to reconcile with someone you have been estranged from. It is fine if it takes a while to do this. What matters the most is your willingness to be a peacemaker and that starts with your decision to be obedient. Holy Spirit will enable you to follow through as you yield to the process of God and trust in his guidance.
