Be a Witness
“’For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard.” Acts 22:15
Martys the Greek word for witness has several meanings. It could refer to being a witness in a legal sense as in a court of law where you testify about something. It could be in an historical sense where you are recounting something that has taken place because you were a spectator of the thing. It could be in an ethical sense in that you have lived after the example of Christ and have undergone a violent death.
Thayer’s Greek Lexicon breaks down being a witness even further. It is “to be a witness for one” and to “serve him by testimony.” It is to be “faithful interpreters of God’s counsels” these are called God’s witnesses.
Many have relegated being a witness to one specific function that is to go out and tell someone of the good news. Although this is a form of witnessing, it is not the only function of a true witness of God.
Our words, actions, deeds, and life are to witness that we belong to Christ. Our counsel and habits are to testify that we serve him. We are to interpret the counsel of God with spiritual understanding and not from a worldly point of view.
Are you God’s witness? Do you serve him by testimony? Have you undergone a violent death to self?
This week’s challenge is to be “God’s witness” in all that you do. Allow Holy Spirit to direct you as you are fashioned after the example of God’s faithful witness Jesus Christ.
“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,” Revelation 1:5
