Examine Yourself
“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?” 2 Corinthians 13:5
Paul admonishes us to examine ourselves to determine whether we are in the faith. This is a remarkable command because as believers it is easy to believe we are already in the faith. However, the apostle’s command goes deeper that what we may think!
Peirazō is the Greek word used for examine in 2 Corinthians 13:5, it means to learn by trial or to know by experience. It involves a piercing action where something is pierced through in order to get to the other side. According to the root meaning, it refers to when God allows evils (trials or tests) to come upon us in order to prove our character and steadfastness of faith. Will we be enticed to sin or do we possess virtue of character.
When we go through these tests, do we possess faith, an unwavering conviction of the truth? Do we have a belief with the predominate idea of confidence or trust in God?
Do our words, emotions, and thoughts persuade us to believe, obey, yield to, or comply with the Word of God? Are we convinced that we should listen to, have confidence or trust in the goodness of God?
This week’s challenge is to examine yourself and determine if you are “in the faith.” Do your words, actions, thoughts, and emotions testify that you believe and trust in God? When you go through tests, do you pierce through the darkness until you come out on the other side?
